  • Can The Course Accommodate My Busy Schedule?
    At Saint Joseph’s College, we understand you have a lot on your plate, that’s why we offer the Veterinary Office Assistant class in an online setting. We provide flexibility through online lectures to accommodate your busy schedule while still having the accountability of meeting with your classmates. Online lectures will be taught synchronously. Synchronous instruction is real-time instruction that requires students to attend online lectures at scheduled times.
  • What A Typical Day At Work Is Like?
    As a Veterinary Office Assistant, multitasking is key. You’ll be helping the office run smoothly while also fostering client relationships and relaying information to the veterinary care team. You will be the first point of contact for every client that visits the animal clinic. It is imperative you create a welcoming, friendly environment so superb customer service is required. Greeting all clients with a smile and conversing with a friendly tone is of the upmost importance. Typical administrative tasks include scheduling appointments, preparing invoices, processing payments, and maintaining records. You may be asked to help prepare prescriptions or provide home-care instructions to pet owners. Many animal clinics also offer retail items such as food and toys which you may be asked to sell and manage inventory for. At times, you may need to control emotional expressions and remain poised and focused during difficult situations. Showing compassion during times of bad news or outcomes including euthanasia of companion animals.

    The Certified Veterinary Office Assistant (CVOA) program at Saint Joseph’s College prepares students to balance exceptional customer service with a range of administrative duties. You’ll master the skills required to be successful in a variety of animal medical practice settings and you’ll graduate as a qualified professional. Upon completion of this course, students will be eligible to sit for their CVOA national certification. The certification is through the National Career Certification Board (NCCB).

    A Veterinary Office Assistant makes the first interaction in an animal care office. They spend a great deal of time interacting with clients and relaying information to the veterinarian and vet technicians. They promote a peaceful, positive environment for the animals and their owners and leave an everlasting impression. They also have the ability to provide comfort during difficult or heartbreaking situations.
  • What A Typical Day At Work Is Like?
    QMAs start out as CNAs so they already have specialized training in direct patient care, but have extra qualifications that allows them to administer both prescription and non-prescription medications to patients. In a typical day, a QMA’s duties may include: · Administering medications to patients according to their prescribed schedules · Monitoring patients for any adverse reactions or side effects from medications · Documenting medication administration and any observed changes in patients' conditions · Assisting with the preparation and organization of medication supplies · Collaborating with healthcare professionals to ensure proper medication management · Providing emotional support and reassurance to patients during medication administration
  • Why This Career Is Important?
    QMAs serve an important function in settings where daily patient care is routine and ongoing, such as long term care facilities, assisted living facilities, or rehab centers. In settings such as these, the number of patients requiring multiple medications daily can be quite large so having a qualified professional to administer medications allows LPNs and RNs more time to focus on higher level tasks of patient care.
  • Benefits Of Our Certificate Program
    The Qualified Medication Aide (QMA) program at Saint Joseph's College prepares CNAs with hands-on learning to apply treatments and administer medications to patients. You’ll undergo approximately 100 hours of comprehensive training in pharmacology and medication knowledge. Around half of the training involves supervised medication administration including insulin administration. Upon completion of the course, students will be eligible to sit for their QMA certification exam. The certification is through the Indiana Department of Health. After successfully passing the written test, students will be placed on the Qualified Nurse Aide Registry for the state of Indiana. A QMA must also obtain six hours of medication related inservice education each year.
  • Potential Opportunities For Program Graduates
    As a QMA, you’ll have opportunities to work in various healthcare settings including hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, rehabilitation centers and psychiatric hospitals. Becoming a QMA may be particularly appealing to anyone who is considering a licensed nursing role, as pharmacology is a heavy focus of LPN and RN schooling, and experience as a QMA would offer an advantage over individuals with no prior pharmacology knowledge.
  • Who Is Drawn To This Career Path?
    If you have an eye for detail, you’ll likely find success in your career as a Qualified Medication Aide. Being detail oriented is an important quality because dosage, route, and timing of medication administration must all be carefully understood and adhered to in order to avoid errors that could cause harm to patients.
  • Has there been an assessment on the buildings? Has there been any discussion around saving some of the buildings? What are the buildings current conditions?
    The Core Education building is our primary teaching building. It is fully operational and has recently been equipped with a new 25-person technology lab, four healthcare certification teaching labs, and a new HVAC system. The apartments are our primary accommodation space and we are making roof, door, window and room repairs, as necessary. The Chapel was recently tuck-pointed in 2020 per the intentions of our Fellows gift. As you can imagine, maintaining a campus of this size takes a quality maintenance crew and we are proud of the work they do. Each building is checked daily protecting our investment to the best our budget allows. The trustees and staff have a clear understanding that we invest in buildings and infrastructure that are needed to bring in new learners. Many other buildings are in our hip pocket and will be utilized as the demand requires. For example, Raleigh Hall was identified as the next building to utilize for alternative revenue streams and/or teaching space. Our own maintenance crew has cleared the interior which allows the college to showcase the space to potential opportunities. We will be working on a new strategic plan for our buildings.
  • What is the source of the scholarships funds that enable the students to take courses tuition-free? Are there any funds from the State of Indiana involved?
    Students in our Certified Clinical Medical Assistant program are eligible to receive funding through Indiana’s Next Level Jobs, which provides scholarships for high-demand job fields. Work One is another state agency with whom we work closely to help interested students obtain funding for tuition, materials and gas cards to assist with travel costs. Saint Joseph’s College is also providing internal scholarships to students in need thanks to donations from constituents. All students in need of internal scholarships or state funding must meet certain criteria and submit documentation in order to be considered. At their own expense, our partner institutions have also offered portions of their tuition for free to new students. Also, there is approximately $5M in our endowment, most of which is donor restricted. No funds from the endowment have been or will be utilized, unless the donor wishes to release the funds or change a restriction. Some endowment funds are board-restricted which can be release if needed.
  • As with any college, especially one that is working to grow programs for revitalization, there are always short- and long-term plans. What, in essence, are the 1 year, 5 year, and 10 year plans for SJC?
    Our short-term plans are in place offering certification programs and accredited classes through partnerships with other colleges and universities. Our Health Science certifications have been successful and growing with over 100 graduates since developed in 2020. Based on this success and requests from the greater community, several additional certifications have been added this spring. So far, our accredited programs have not attracted the students we hoped. We again have listened to the community and identified several accredited programs that have demand. These programs are now being marketed and we are accepting applications for August 2022 start. These programs are offered through our partnership with St. Thomas in Houston. Long term plans include our current two-pronged approach as well as partnering with regional employers. There is value in a four-year degree and we will continue to figure out how we fit in that space. The Mission, staff, and Board believe a Saint Joe point of difference should include providing a living wage, skills, and support to the learner that is unsure and should not take on lifelong debt. Each day we are taking calls, listening, and offering programs that fit the community's needs.
  • What are the current plans for Saint Joseph's College?
    The Mission is the driving force behind what we do, proven through the programs we offer and how we evaluate new opportunities. The priority of our time and efforts focus around programs that support today’s community of learners with the understanding that sustainability of our campus and its ability to do its work for years to come are paramount.
  • What are the probable starting salaries for those who complete a certificate program?
    This depends on many factors: the program the student completed, any prior applicable experience, the location of the employer, the position applied for, etc. Conservatively, graduates can expect to earn 30% more per year with certification. We intend to share more of these stories, though, a recent graduate who has managerial experience recently accepted a position as a pediatric clinical manager earning approximately $60,000 per year. More information on potential starting salaries can be found on each program’s page within our website.
  • How has SJC engaged alumni for assistance in efforts to revitalize campus?
    Most recently, SJC staff worked closely with the Alumni Association to bring homecoming back on campus in 2021. Our facilities team did a phenomenal job renovating the Lake Banet area for the event. We continue to work with the Alumni Association on future plans to get more activities on campus. In 2019, a group of dedicated alumni spent countless volunteer hours to revitalize the Gil Hodges baseball field for an event. We will continue to do more with alumni in the future. We recognize the willingness alumni have to help revitalize and care for certain areas around campus. Our insurance company is strict on what they will and will not allow, which limits us on what we can have alumni assist with. In most cases, more than just a signed waiver would be needed as it takes a lot of volunteer hours and funds to complete these projects.

  • What is the current financial status of Saint Joseph's College?
    Saint Joseph’s College is in good financial standing. We settled our debt in 2018 and are now approximately three years ahead of schedule to pay off the remaining balance. We have been investing our money wisely in areas that are beneficial for our future. All donations from the 128 Core Partners campaign have been held in a separate account, are Board restricted, and are still earmarked for a future opportunity.
  • Where are the SJC archives currently located?
    The archives remain in their location in the Science building. There are no plans to relocate the archives at this time. The building is being checked daily to be sure no issues arise.
  • What progress has been made in the quest to regain accreditation?
    In order to apply for accreditation, the Higher Learning Commission requires Saint Joe to have a certain number of faculty, students and programs consistently over a period of time. Our health science certification programs are a step in the right direction; as we continue to grow our partnerships with other universities, their programs may also contribute. This application process could take five to seven years to approve.   • What is your focus as a learning institution?
    We prioritize practical learning that can be applied to real-world work environments. If something is taught here, it’s because it has value in the workplace. This progressive approach to higher education has enabled our college to better reflect the needs and interests of today’s students and working professionals.
  • Where is Saint Joe’s physically located?
    Our campus is located in beautiful Rensselaer, Indiana. For on-campus participants, it is within easy commuting distance for neighboring regions throughout Indiana and Illinois.

  • Is Saint Joe’s a religious environment? Will I feel comfortable?

  • Is Saint Joe’s a traditional college?
    Yes, in the sense that we are committed to quality higher education and the success of our learners. However, we have evolved our approach, and our programs are now achievable within weeks or 2-year commitments.
  • Do you believe people should have a four-year education?
    Yes, but traditional 4-year education isn’t for everyone. It leaves large gaps in the population who are employment minded. Our learners of all ages (not just typical college age) tend to be career-driven and highly motivated. As a result, our programs are tailored to those who want to: put their existing talents to better use, or develop new professional skills, or larn a valuable certification to elevate their career, or enter the workforce with specialized knowledge, or learn something that will take them in a new direction Even though we have evolved in recent years, we remain very proud of our long heritage as a four-year college, and the thousands of graduates who graced our halls throughout our history.
  • Do you offer tuition assistance?
    Yes! There are a few different ways students can receive tuition assistance. Students in our Certified Clinical Medical Assistant program are eligible to receive funding through Indiana’s Next Level Jobs, which provides scholarships for high-demand job fields. Work One is another state agency with whom we work closely to help interested students obtain funding for tuition, materials and gas cards to assist with travel costs. We also provide internal scholarships to students in need thanks to donations from generous alumni. All students in need of internal scholarships or state funding must meet certain criteria and submit documentation in order to be considered. The degree programs are also eligible for FAFSA , so federal funding and Pell Grants can be utilized. Our partner institutions offering these degree programs have also offered portions of their tuition for free to new students.
  • What kinds of learning programs do you offer?
    We offer an array of professional certifications and two-year degree programs. Many of these programs are offered during the evening to accommodate working professionals and those who have commitments elsewhere.
  • When do your programs start and end?
    As of Summer 2023 we are on a Semester cycle. So programs will start and end in the Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring. Some programs are less intense and are therefore shorter. Please refer to each program page for specific dates and for the next open enrollment period.
  • Can I take one program and be done?
    Yes! Many learners come here to achieve specialized knowledge for a specific field, which is often covered by one course/program. So if you finish your program with the learning you need, you’re done. Of course you are welcome to continue your studies, or to re-enroll at any point in the future.
  • Do you offer hybrid and online programs in addition to on-campus?
    Yes! To better serve those outside of our geographic area, and for those who prefer distance learning, we have a nice selection of hybrid and online programs. The online/hybrid versions provide the same caliber of training and learning opportunities as our in-person programs, and the options are expanding on an ongoing basis.
  • What are the pre-requisites for your certificate programs?
    Each program has its own requirements, most of which are easy to fulfill even for those with no existing higher education. When you visit our program pages, you will see the specific requirements for the program that interests you.
  • What are the benefits for those who complete your certificate programs?
    Many of our graduates go on to earn promotions, pay increases, and other perks related to greater skill and proficiency.
  • If I graduate from one of your certificate programs, will I leave with a professional certification?
    Yes! Upon completion of a certificate program, you will be eligible to sit for a State or National Exam, most of which are available to take on-campus, so you'll earn your professional certificate through the agency connected to your specific program. You will also earn a Saint Joe certificate to show your achievement. Both certificates can be listed on your resume, professional qualifications, and other areas.
  • If I graduate from one of your degree programs, will I leave with a diploma?
    Yes! All of our degree programs are offered through a unique partnership with other colleges so you will graduate with a degree from their accredited institution. You will receive a physical diploma that recognizes you and your achievement, which can be listed on your resume, professional qualifications and other areas.
  • What is your high school skill building program for area teens?
    To better involve the community, we launched a groundbreaking skill development program encouraging high school students to jumpstart their higher learning journey. It introduces participants to higher learning at an earlier age, providing them with advantages they would not have otherwise. Those interested in taking part should contact us.
  • How can I help Saint Joe’s?
    You can help by telling your friends and family about our programs, so that everyone who may be interested knows about our training tracks and what we have to offer. We also graciously appreciate donations to help support our efforts.

  • Do you offer CPR?
    Yes! We offer a 6-hour CPR workshop that we recommend to all community members. It is important to stay CPR certified according to the latest techniques.

    If we did not have Billing and Coding Specialists, our healthcare system would not be able to function properly. This is because medical billing and coding occurs every time a patient sees a healthcare provider. The healthcare provider reviews a patient’s complaint and medical history, makes an expert assessment of what’s wrong, offers treatment, and documents the visit. Specialized training is required to understand what to do next. This is where the Billing and Coding Specialist comes in to review the documentation. They abstract all diagnoses, procedures, treatments, and other services to transform them into universal medical alphanumeric codes. Once those codes are determined, invoices are prepared for reimbursement claims to insurance companies or to collect payments from patients. This careful and meticulous work serves an important function in our medical system.

    The Certified Medical Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) program at Saint Joseph's College prepares you to thrive in the fast-paced, technology-driven healthcare field. While earning your medical billing and coding certificate here, you’ll learn how to accurately assign ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS codes for diagnoses, procedures, and medical services as part of the insurance reimbursement process.   • What A Typical Day At Work Is Like
    A medical assistant may help up to 25 patients each day, but what they assist with depends on the nature of the patient’s visit. However, a few tasks are essential to perform for almost all patients: gathering general information such as height and weight measuring vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, respiration rate and temperature. Other tasks include: Administering medications Providing patient education Assisting with examinations Obtaining laboratory specimens Perform EKGs Give injections Remove sutures or staples

    At Saint Joseph’s College, we understand you have a lot on your plate, that’s why we offer both in-person and hybrid class settings for our Medical Assisting program. We provide flexibility through online lectures to accommodate your busy schedule while still having the accountability of meeting in person. Online lectures will be taught synchronously. Synchronous instruction is real-time instruction that requires students to attend online lectures at scheduled times.
  • Can I Receive Credit Towards an Undergraduate Degree?
    Yes! Our Certified Clinical Medical Assistant program has been approved by the American Council on Education's (ACE) Learning Evaluations Service so you'll gain academic credit for formal courses and examinations. 2 semester hours towards a lower division baccalaureate or associate degree have been approved for transferable credit. Certification holders that have successfully passed the NHA CCMA exam between Jan. 1, 2020 to present are eligible to apply for ACE credit. It is NOT retroactive prior to 2020. *Please note that the evaluation and acceptance of transfer credits is always up to the incoming institution and it is not a guarantee that transfer credits will be aligned or awarded.

Before students are sent out for their clinical experiences, we replicate real-life situations in our medical lab, allowing our students to practice and perfect their learning and skills.     Clinical Medical Assistants are vital to the patient experience in a healthcare setting. They’re typically the first medical professional a patient interacts with during a visit - they serve as a connector between a patient and their physician. Medical assistants will prepare examination rooms, conduct a medical history interview to gather concerns and symptoms, and measure various vital signs that will be passed along to the physician. Medical Assistants also help put patients at ease to overcome “white coat syndrome” – an anxiety condition that causes elevated blood pressure readings while in a physician’s office.     EKG Technicians usually work at hospitals or health clinics, however, some Technicians will work in doctor's offices and private practices. Though, they’ll always work directly with their patients. Earning an EKG certification is an excellent starting point for a productive career path. Our Certified ElectrocarDiogram Technician program has been approved by the American Council on Education's (ACE) Learning Evaluations Service so you'll gain academic credit for formal courses and examinations taken outside the traditional classroom. 2 semester hours towards a lower division baccalaureate or associate degree have been approved for transferable credit. Certification holders that have successfully passed the CET exam between June 1, 2022 to present, are eligible to apply for ACE credit. *Please note that the evaluation and acceptance of transfer credits is always up to the incoming institution and it is not a guarantee that transfer credits will be aligned or awarded.

    Each clinical partner agency sets its own requirements for employees and affiliated learners (i.e., SJC CNA students). At this time, all major hospital entities, community health clinics, private practices and long term care facilities with whom Saint Joseph's College has a Clinical Affiliation Agreement have mandated such individuals obtain a full course of the COVID-19 vaccine. ​CNA students are to show proof of being fully vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus upon registering for classes. The vaccination is required to complete clinical hours with our partner agencies.
