Saint Joseph's College Announces a New Building & Trades Program

Saint Joseph’s College is thrilled to announce a groundbreaking partnership project dedicated to advancing the education, training, and career progression of youth and underrepresented individuals in residential construction--the Saint Joseph's Building and Trades Program. In 2024, Saint Joseph’s College earmarked a plot of land with a steadfast commitment to construct a house each year for the forthcoming 28 years.

Rensselaer Central High School, along with a consortium of local manufacturing and construction businesses, have rallied together to address a pressing issue: the acute shortage of skilled workers in the construction industry. The strategic collaboration with the Central Midwest Carpenters marks a significant stride towards cultivating a diverse and skilled talent pipeline in Northwest Indiana, where a critical shortage of skilled workers continues to pose a threat to the industry’s capacity to meet the burgeoning demand for new housing.

This partnership will serve to forge connections with local organizations, promoting construction careers in schools, and providing hands-on learning, soft-skills training, job search assistance. Moreover, it offers the invaluable opportunity of mentorship from a team of seasoned construction management professionals.

Board Chair, Mike Van Eekeren, expresses his enthusiasm for the initiative: “Saint Joseph’s College continues its mission of providing educational opportunities to the local community. Just as it has in the past, Saint Joseph’s College adapts to meet the education needs of the community. The building and trades addition is in direct response to community needs.”

A Groundbreaking and ribbon cutting ceremony is planned for July 25, 2024 at 1pm. Join us at the corner of E. Daughtery Road and S. Sparling Ave behind campus. A short reception will follow the ceremony at 2pm in the Core Building Foyer.
