Name, Age, what course did you take and where are you originally from?
My name is Leah Harvey. I am 23 years old and from Rensselaer, Indiana. I finished the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) course and passed my state exam in January 2021.
What were you doing before you attended SJC?
Before attending SJC, I was working as an Assistant Manager at the local DQ. I was originally going to attend Purdue University to get my bachelors degree in Psychological Sciences. I then decided I’d rather work in healthcare but didn’t know where to start. The CCMA program was perfect for me because it allowed me to test the waters of healthcare and see if I liked it without having to commit to a degree. My customer service skills came in great use as well because I was able to apply that to my current job. I love my job so much as a Medical Assistant that I have decided to go to nursing school!
Where are you currently working and what do you like about it? What’s a typical day on the job like?
For the past 2.5 years I have been working in the Outpatient Specialty Department at Franciscan Health Rensselaer. I am the only MA in the hospital so it was quite the learning curve! I like my job because as a specialty department, everyday is something new. One day I am working with a cardiologist, the next day an orthopedic surgeon, the next day a general surgeon, and so on. I have learned so much since I’ve been in my role. It’s incredibly rewarding to experience each specialty and learn how I can help patients who suffer from different conditions. It’s also amazing getting the opportunity to observe surgeries!
Favorite memory of your time spent at SJC or something that stood out to you?
I had many great memories at SJC! From studying with my classmates at Royal Oak, to the relief of getting in the last required blood draw, and especially to the party our instructor Hali threw for us on the very last day of class. It was a great experience all-around.
How did you hear about our programming, or what made you choose SJC?
I first became aware of the CCMA program through the sign in front of the college advertising different certification programs. The SJC website has a lot of great information and resources I used in order to enroll.
How did SJC contribute to your success?
SJC helped contribute towards my success by allowing me to study from a program that opened many doors for me! I learned a lot throughout the course, and I am still able to continue studying online through the NHA.
