OUTCOMES: Students will be cognizant of the major themes and persons in the Christian Spiritual Traditions. Students will develop an understanding of the context of spirituality, e.g., the interaction of culture, history, religion, theology etc.. Students will become knowledgeable of the various forms and types of spiritualities, to enable them to develop their own spiritual life and to walk with others on their journey. Students will also be introduced to some cross-cultural spirituality.

Alister E. McGrath Christian Spirituality (Malden, MA: Blackwell Publishers, Inc. 1999).  

METHOD:   During these weeks we will be reading, reflecting on and discussing the text. Emphasis will be placed on relating the text to our own experiences and relation to ministry. A weekly "journal" or reflective paper will be used to facilitate appropriation of the text in relation to one's spirituality

ASSIGNMENTS: A (almost) weekly reflective paper will be required. In this writing the students are to relate the textual material to their own spiritual journey (about 2 pages typed). Additionally, each student will be required to write a brief paper (@ 5 pages) on a figure or group in the Christian spiritual traditions. Be sure to see the spirituality links and the URLs in the back of the text for resources for this paper.

ATTENDANCE
           
Since we only meet once a week  and participation in discussions is an integral part of the learning process, attendance is crucial.  Since things do come up, you will be permitted one absence without penalty.  Two absences will result in the final grade being dropped by ½ letter (e.g., from B to B-); three absences, a full letter grade reduction; and more than three absences will result in failure of the course.
