Village of Hope (submitted by Anna Westwood)
"...Friday
August 6th
...we went in a
couple homes and saw the kids. They love Fr. Vincent. He is
amazing with them. He has so much love and compassion. He
handed one of the kids to me. I just looked in the little girl's
eyes. I wanted to cry, but she just kept giggling. hope, i
thought, Fr. Vincent has given them hope. We went to the hospital
portion of the village. we met a seven year old girl named
Gloria. She weighed 22 pounds. She was literally nothing but
skin and bones. it made me sick looking at her frail body.
she didn't talk but instead showed us that was was able to write her
letters and numbers. Fr. Vincent said she actually looked great
because she was sitting up. I can't imagine what she looked like
before. Lastly we went to the schoolhouse where 40 kids sat at
their desks. The sisters there told us they were going to sing for
us. They all jumped up and SCREAMED every word to every song
with huge smiles on their faces. i started to cry. it was so
beautiful, so innocent and so heartbreaking at the same time. for
the last song they did actions and dance steps. it was
adorable. i wanted to believe that they were all healthy children,
but that was not the reality. i continued to fight back
tears. They all yelled, "Bye, bye!" waving their hands and shaking
ours as we left. Absolutely precious...We stepped right outside
of the classroom where Fr. Vincent talked for a short while before we
had to leave. He said, "I know I can't heal
everyone that is sick, but that is not justification for me not to
help the number of people I can." He told the story of the
starfish. He said a young boy was walking along the shore at
night throwing starfish back into the ocean. An older man saw him
and asked what the little boy was doing. the boy replied,
"I'm saving these starfish. They'll die if i don't." The
older man said he couldn't possibly save them all. The
boy picked up a starfish and said, "Not all of them, but this
one, this one...I can." I cried, couldn't hold it back
anymore. I lost it. How amazing. God Bless that
place...
