Saint Joseph's College's Gerald Childs Receives Scholarship from Alpha Lambda Delta
Dr. Susan Melson Huffman, National President of Alpha Lambda Delta, announced today that a Jo Anne J. Trow Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 has been awarded to Saint Joseph's College junior and Biology-Chemistry major Gerald Childs for the 2012-2013 academic year.
A native of Munster, Ind., Childs is the secretary of SJC's Alpha Lambda Delta chapter, a tutor in Chemistry and Biology, a member of the Science Club, a student security employee, and a resident assistant.
"Gerald is a hard worker, intellectually curious, creative, and above all one of the nicest human beings I have ever met," said SJC Assistant Professor of Computer Science Brian Capouch, who taught Gerald in Cores One and Two. "Gerald represents everything good that a teacher can say about a student."
Founded in 1924 at the University of Illinois by Dean of Women Maria Leonard, Alpha Lambda Delta is a national honor society that recognizes and encourages academic excellence among first year students. The Jo Anne J. Trow Scholarship was started in 1988 in honor of a past National President of Alpha Lambda Delta. Jo Anne J. Trow is the former Vice-President for Student Services at Oregon State University. This award was originally established to give chapters of Alpha Lambda Delta an annual opportunity to reward members who were outstanding in their sophomore year.
For the 2012 competition, the national selection committee reviewed more than 100 applicants.
"This year's applicant pool was extremely strong, and selecting 35 winners from such a large group of outstanding students was, as always, a challenge," said Dr. Huffman.
Every year, National Alpha Lambda Delta awards at least 35 Trow scholarships to outstanding students across the country. The competition is open to any members of the Society who have maintained the required 3.5 GPA through their sophomore year. Selection is based on academic records, participation in Alpha Lambda Delta activities, applicants' statements, and campus and community activities.
Saint Joseph's College, named a "character-building college" by the Templeton Foundation and a "best Midwestern college" by the Princeton Review, is a four-year, Catholic college offering 27 majors, 4 group majors, 34 minors, and 9 pre-professional programs, complemented by the nationally acclaimed Core Program. Founded and sponsored by the Missionaries of the Precious Blood, SJC is located in Rensselaer, Indiana, approximately 90 minutes from both Chicago and Indianapolis, on a park-like campus of 180 acres and has an enrollment of 1,100 students.
