Saint Joseph's College Receives Grant Award from INSGC
The Indiana Space Grant Consortium (INSGC) announced that Saint Joseph's College has been awarded $15,000 for a grant titled "Preparing for Environmental Careers through Hands-On Learning."
The purpose of the grant is to provide opportunities for students in Core 6 and science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines to explore STEM topics and environmental careers in wastewater treatment, renewable energy, and energy conservation through site visits and research on campus or in the local area.
"Students will identify and investigate questions that pique their interest and use cutting-edge technologies to study energy conservation, production and transmission; water use; and wastewater treatment," said SJC Associate Professor of Education Dr. Lana Zimmer. "Those experiences will help them to better understand the environmental challenges facing society today."
Students and faculty in six STEM courses and Core 6 will have the opportunity to work with Algaewheel, a cutting-edge wastewater treatment plant in Reynolds, Ind.; the Rensselaer Wastewater Treatment facility; Meadow Lake Wind Farm, which spreads over White, Jasper, and Benton Counties; Bio Town Ag in Reynolds, Ind.; and the SJC Physical Plant.
"We are excited about this opportunity and grateful to receive the funding from NASA through INSGC," said Associate Professor of Physics and Computer Science and INSGC Affiliate Director Dr. Jennifer Coy.
The INSGC is a source of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)-related information, awards, and programs for the State of Indiana. It awards scholarships to students at its affiliate institutions and is one of 52 consortia that are part of the National Space College and Fellowship Program, initiated by NASA in 1989. Each consortium includes colleges, universities, businesses, and other private and public-sector institutions working to further aerospace education and career training.
Saint Joseph's College, named a "character-building college" by the Templeton Foundation and a "best Midwestern college" by the Princeton Review, is a four-year, Catholic college offering 27 majors, 4 group majors, 34 minors, and 9 pre-professional programs, complemented by the nationally acclaimed Core Program. Founded and sponsored by the Missionaries of the Precious Blood, SJC is located in Rensselaer, Indiana, approximately 90 minutes from both Chicago and Indianapolis, on a park-like campus of 180 acres and has an enrollment of 1,100 students.
