The Indiana Academy Inducts Michael A. Evans, Ph.D. '67 for Lifetime Achievement and Contributions
Four new members, including SJC alumnus Michael A. Evans, Ph.D. '67, were inducted into The Indiana Academy at its 42nd annual symposium on Monday, April 16, at the Skyline Club in Indianapolis. The honorees were recognized by the Independent Colleges of Indiana for lifetimes of achievement and contributions to the state of Indiana.
The founder and chairman of AIT Laboratories, Evans started the company in 1990. AIT provides laboratory and consulting services in compliance monitoring, clinical and forensics toxicology, and bio-analytical testing for the pharmaceutical industry. Since its founding, AIT has grown into a premiere testing and research company recognized nationwide.
In October 2009, Evans made a $10 million gift to SJC, which at the time was the largest gift made in the College's 123-year history. Evans recommended that the gift be used for scholarships but also earmarked its use for the general support of SJC and its programs at the discretion of the Board of Trustees. His desire was nothing but the "maximum benefit" of the gift with the hope of encouraging recipients to think about establishing a similar scholarship when they reach the age or capacity to do so. Evans also made a gift to SJC in 2008 in support of the 21st Century Campaign, and the Evans Arts and Science Building was subsequently named in his honor.
Prior to his career as an entrepreneur, Evans served in various higher education roles and is a current Trustee of SJC and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. He is also a former trustee of Indiana Tech. He has made possible the new College of Osteopathic Medicine and School of Nursing building at Marian University.
Saint Joseph's College, named a "character-building college" by the Templeton Foundation and a "best Midwestern college" by the Princeton Review, is a four-year, Catholic college offering 27 majors, 4 group majors, 34 minors, and 9 pre-professional programs, complemented by the nationally acclaimed Core Program. Founded and sponsored by the Missionaries of the Precious Blood, SJC is located in Rensselaer, Indiana, approximately 90 minutes from both Chicago and Indianapolis, on a park-like campus of 180 acres and has an enrollment of 1,100 students.
