Security and Safety
The Security and Safety Department of Saint Joseph's College embodies the spirit of service and protection. Through our professionalism, we provide for the safety and security of the student body, College staff, and facilities.
In our efforts to provide an environment where students are free to learn, we offer many services. With a quick phone call, we will gladly give a student a ride back to his or her residence hall at night. When possible, we offer drop-off and pick-up assistance to students to some locations in Rensselaer. These locations include places like health clinics for appointments and the train station.
Security is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to address almost any need. Concerns that we handle include, but are not limited to: electrical problems, plumbing issues, room lockouts, some car lockouts, fire alarms, and use of a jump starter. We also utilize Tyco Integrated Security to quickly notify students and employees who wish to receive announcements of immediate safety concerns. Students can sign up for these notifications through their Empower Portal. Feel free to contact us for any problem you might have, and if it is not something we take care of ourselves, we will contact someone that can help.
Saint Joseph's College Security Officers have the authority to ask persons for identification; to determine whether individuals have lawful business at Saint Joseph's College; register vehicles for parking; to issue vehicle related tickets; and to enforce College policy, document incidents and refer individuals into SJC judicial or other administrative processes. Saint Joseph's College security officers do not possess arrest power. Criminal incidents are referred to the Jasper County Sheriff who has jurisdiction on the campus. The Security and Safety Office at Saint Joseph's College maintains a highly professional working relationship with the Rensselaer Police Department, Jasper County Sheriff's Department, and the Indiana State Police. All crime victims and witnesses are strongly encouraged to immediately report crime to the campus Security and Safety Office, and the appropriate police agency. Prompt reporting will assure timely warning notices on-campus.
