Department of Biology - Medical Technology - Advice

PATH 1 - Courses to take for the "3 plus 1" program.

You take med-tech preparatory courses here at Saint Joseph’s College for three years. In the third year, you apply to one of the two hospital based programs (see previous page) affiliated with SJC and does the fourth year there. At the end of the fourth year you receive certification from the hospital program and a bachelor degree from Saint Joseph’s College. Make sure you check the SJC College Catalogue to determine the required courses for earning an SJC Degree after you complete your fourth year.  You will have some options with electives.  To find out your best options it would be wise for you to contact the director of the program that interests you (see directors below).  Here is the advice from the director at Saint Margaret’s.

“You need Basic and Advanced Microbiology (has Immunology), General and Organic Chemistry (check with the program to see if 1 or 2 semesters) and Biochemistry.  I highly recommend also taking Genetics, Anatomy and Physiology, and Medical terminology.  To apply you need an overall GPA of at least 2.50 and a science GPA of at least 2.50.  We begin taking applications in September for the following year’s class (class starts in August).”

Here is the schedule we recommend that allows completion of the SJC portion of the degree in three years.  Keep in mind that Advanced Microbiology is only offered every other year (Fall 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015)

FRESHMAN YEAR
General Biology I & II
General Chemistry I & II
Core 1 & 2
The following courses can be taken in freshman year
- Introductory Microbiology - Winter Semester
- Statistics

ELECTIVES - start talking to the two programs we are affiliated with to see what courses you will take there and which courses they want you to take here at SJC.

SOPHOMORE YEAR
Organic Chemistry I
Organic Chemistry II or Biochemical Physiology:
Advanced Microbiology (take as a sophomore ONLY if it will not be offered next year).

Introductory Microbiology if not already taken - Winter Semester
Core 3 & 4

Statistics if not taken first year
You may wish to get Cores 7 & 8 this year because you will need to have Cores 7-10 finished by the end of your junior year.  You will NOT take Cores 5,6.

ELECTIVES -

JUNIOR YEAR
Finish Cores 7-10
Advanced Microbiology
Work on getting your required courses - don't forget Statistics is required.

Apply to one of the two programs affiliated with SJC (on previous Med-Tech page).  Check to see how many Biology, Chemistry and other credits you get from them.  To graduate with a BS in Medical technology from SJC you need at least 56 credits in Biology & Chemistry (the 56 hours includes both courses taken at SJC and at the Med Tech program in your 4th year).  You must have the required courses listed in the college catalogue, 124 credits overall, statistics and all Cores except 5&6.  Click here for a Checklist for credits toward the 3 and 1 Med Tech Major

PATH 2 - In this path you would take four years at Saint Joseph’s College and get a Bachelors degree in Biology. You then take a year of Medical Technology with any accredited Medical Technology program.  Possible programs are on the Medical Technology page.  This will give you a second degree.  Essentially just follow the advice for the Biology Majors but be sure you take both Introductory and Advanced Microbiology.

At the beginning of your Senior year, you apply to ANY accredited Medical Technology program. In Indiana, most of the Medical Technology programs in CIMLE use a "match" system. You and graduates from other schools apply to programs in CIMLE.  The system then matches students to programs. About 70% of applicants get their first choice.  When you contact the program director, he or she will tell you whether they use the match system or you apply to them directly. The better your preparation and GPA, the more likely you are to get your first choice. Applications to out of state programs are not handled with a match system.
